Circumstances around teen's disappearance still murky

The girl went missing Monday morning

KATY, Texas – The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances that led to a 13-year-old girl's disappearance and subsequent Amber Alert.

The teen disappeared Monday while walking to the bus stop on Fry near Younglake. On Tuesday, an Amber Alert regarding her disappearance was issued by Katy Independent School District police.

The teen was found safe Tuesday afternoon at an undisclosed apartment complex. Three men found with the girl were taken into custody for questioning.

Sheriff's officials said one of the men found with the girl was already under investigation for a prior incident involving the same teen. Sheriff's officials told Channel 2 Investigates the 13-year-old disappeared with the 20-year-old man in June.

The girl's parents said their daughter met this man online.

Sheriff's officials said the man took the girl home during the June incident and they were investigating whether an "inappropriate relationship" happened during that time.

The parents of the teen told Katy ISD police their daughter had actually been kidnapped in June. However, sheriff's officials said the family never told them the June disappearance involved a kidnapping.

Sheriff's officials said after the girl was found Tuesday, she was taken to Texas Children's Hospital to undergo a sexual assault examination.

Sheriff's officials said they still don't know whether the teen left with the man willingly or by force. So far, no charges have been filed against the 20-year-old man. Sheriff's officials said they were still trying to figure out whether the other two men at the apartment had any involvement in the teen's disappearance.

While KPRC named the teen when the Amber Alert was issued, we are longer using her name because of the possibility the investigation into her disappearance may involve sexual assault.

KPRC is also not naming the man found with the girl, since he has not yet been charged with any crime.
