Bretagne would have turned 17 in August, but the golden retriever's health was declining and her handlers made the difficult decision to put her down.

Bretagne joined the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department's Search and Rescue team in 2000. She had been deployed to several disasters over the years, including New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

After her retirement many years ago, she spent her time visiting with children at local elementary schools.

Bretagne was laid to rest in the Houston area.

The memorial will begin at 7:15 a.m. at Cy-Fair Station 11, where a plaque will be dedicated in her memory.
