7-year-old boy accidentally shoots himself in face

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas – Brazoria County deputies were called to the 4000 block of East Highway 6 around noon on Wednesday after reports of a 7-year-old boy who had shot himself in the face.

The boy was able to get into his grandparents' locked gun cabinet and found a .38-caliber revolver, police said. He fired one round, which went into his forehead just below his hairline, according to reports.

The bullet exited the crown of the boy's head without penetrating the skull.

The boy is expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the child had to climb up a 5-foot tall dresser and sort through dozens of keys before he found the gun safe key.

"If you have children, keep your guns secured, if you have them in a locked area that's accessible by key, put the key in a very high ring, maybe on a hook inside a closet 6 feet up that only an adult would be able to reach, or maybe someone that's older that has already had enough gun education," James Wolfe, with the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, said.

Investigators said the grandparents will not face any charges, since they had the weapon properly locked up in a safe place.
