4-year-old boy hit, killed in parking lot in southwest Houston

HOUSTON – Houston police said a 4-year-old boy died after being hit while riding his bicycle in the parking lot of a southwest Houston apartment complex.

The accident happened Tuesday evening at a complex on Wilcrest near South Street.

“It's just too heartbreaking to put into words,” said family friend Akeel Cochinwala.

Cochinwala said the complex is very family oriented and the little boy, Jahneb Azeem, was well known.

“He was very outgoing, knew everybody here. We are all affected, we knew the family so well. Everybody knew the family,” said Cochinwala.

Police said the boy was riding his bicycle in the parking lot when the driver of an Infiniti SUV came through the complex. Police said they believe the 41-year-old female driver just didn't see the child and hit him.

Accident investigators said the boy was rushed Texas Children's Hospital, where he died.

The driver of the SUV was thoroughly questioned by officers. Investigators said the driver was not impaired, and she was questioned and released.

A family member said speeding is a major problem in the complex, and he's angry the apartment managers haven't done more to address the issue.

Police said, at this time, they do anticipate the driver will face charges.
