Clerk shoots robber at north Houston Family Dollar

HOUSTON – A clerk opened fire and fatally shot a man during an attempted robbery Friday morning at a Family Dollar Store in north Houston, according to police.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at the store in the 8600 block of W. Montgomery. The mother of a woman inside the story told KPRC 2 that a masked man walked into the store and demanded money.

Police said the man had his hand inside his jacket pocket as if he was holding a gun. However, officers would not confirm whether the suspect actually had a weapon.

The witness said all the customers ran to the back of the store to hide when she heard gunshots. She said she saw the robber dead on the floor.

"I don't blame the guy for shooting him and I feel sorry for the family and their loss," the witness' mother told KPRC 2. "But you can't just take people's things like that."

The victim has not been identified.

The case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.
