New program promises to take owners inside dog's heads

After finishing two hour test, full report shows how smart your dog is

HOUSTON – Helaine and Bob Weidner are running out of room in their home they share with four greyhounds.

The Weidner's 2-year-old greyhound, Kennedy stands out from the rest. According to the Weidner's, she's their trouble maker.

"She likes to take my husbands hats. She rips them up," Helaine said.

The Weidners said Kennedy tends to be on the disruptive side.

"If I can learn something, what's going through their head, I would be thrilled to know more," said Bob.

The Weidners got the chance to find out what's going in Kennedy's head, thanks to Dognition, a program created by scientists at Duke University.

Dognition promises to reveal secrets about your pet's personality and how they think, so you can better understand, train and bond with them.

After finishing a two hour test, you get a full report showing how smart your dog is.

The Weidners broke their test up into a couple of days.

First, the Weidner's checked how long Kennedy would hold their gaze, then how well she followed commands.

Dog behavior expert, Todd Langston, has been training dogs for nearly a decade, and he used Dognition with his 4-year-old pet, Almondine.

"I liked the direction, I liked the concept," said Langston.

Langston also said it's too scientific.

The Weidner's told Local 2 the same thing and Dognition didn't give them the answers they were hoping for.

However, every dog is different, and according to experts, this test can help some people.

For $100 you will have access to a team of dog experts so you can find out why your pet eats your hats or why they act differently around certain people.
