All-Star wins fourth career AL Player of the Month Award, second this season

HOUSTON, TX – Major League Baseball announced today that Astros DH Yordan Alvarez has been named American League Player of the Month for July. It is the fourth career AL Player of the Month Award for Alvarez and his second this season, also winning the award in March-April.
For the month of July, Alvarez hit .360 (31x86) with nine home runs, 22 RBI, a .467 OBP, a .721 slugging percentage, and a 1.188 OPS in 23 games in the month. In July, Alvarez led the AL in home runs, RBI, OPS and SLG, while ranking second in walks (15), second in hits, and fourth in batting average and OBP.
As part of his prolific month at the plate, Alvarez received AL Player of the Week honors for the week of June 29-July 5. That week was highlighted by his game on July 4 vs. Tampa Bay, when Alvarez had two home runs and six RBI, including a walkoff home run in the bottom of the 9th inning in a 10-8 Astros win. Also during the month, Alvarez posted a 16-game on-base streak, which is still active, and a 10-game hitting streak from July 10-24. Alvarez also started the All-Star Game this month, going 1x2 with a run scored in the Midsummer Classic on July 14.
July was a continuation of Alvarez’s MVP-caliber year, a season in which he currently leads the league in all three Triple Crown categories, ranking first in batting average (.330), HR (35), and RBI (84). Additionally, he leads MLB in OPS (1.092), OBP (.442), SLG (.650), extra-base hits (59), and total bases (262). In the AL, he ranks first in hits (133) and runs (77), and third in walks (77).
Alvarez is now just the second Astros player to win two Player of the Month Awards in a single season, joining 1B Jeff Bagwell, who won the NL Player of the Month in June and July of 1994, which was his MVP season. The Astros have had several pitchers win multiple Pitcher of the Month awards in a single season, most recently accomplished in 2019 by RHP Gerrit Cole, who won three times that season.
Along with his four career AL Player of the Month Awards, Alvarez has earned six career AL Player of the Week honors and was named AL Rookie of the Month three consecutive months in 2019 (June-August).
