Gilbert's estranged wife, 28-year-old Ciara Brown, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The baby was placed in the care of family members.

Houston police said witnesses reported seeing Gilbert breaking the apartment window and shooting into the apartment before fleeing the scene.

Police were then notified Gilbert had checked into West Houston Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Police said Gilbert told medical personnel he suffered the wound at the Panagard address.

The investigation is ongoing.
