Deputies responding to a welfare check in northwest Harris County found a man dead and a woman critically injured inside an apartment.
Authorities say the man and woman were in a dating relationship and he became upset when she planned to leave him.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.
A hammer was found near the scene, though investigators have not confirmed if it was involved.
A 6-year-old child, the daughter of the wounded woman, was unharmed. Deputies reported that she had to open the door to allow officers into the apartment.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that homicide and crime scene investigators are on scene. Previous calls for service at the apartment did not indicate prior violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
