Sunnyside history

The Sunnyside neighborhood is located in the southeastern part of Houston. Historically, it has been predominantly recognized as an African American community.

In recent times, there have been efforts to revitalize the beloved neighborhood, including community development projects, educational initiatives, and infrastructure improvements. However, like many urban areas, Sunnyside still grapples with socioeconomic disparities and other related issues.

Sunnyside is a community with a rich history and a resilient spirit that we feel deserves to be persevered and highlighted.

The KPRC 2 series Our Town is taking an in-depth look at 10 communities in the Houston area that are overcoming day-to-day adversities.

The new series began with exploring the Alief/Westwood area, one of the most populated neighborhoods, which is known for making waves with its innovative initiatives and vibrant community spirit.

We‘re looking to learn about the history of these neighborhoods and how they have become a melting pot of different cultures and languages.
