How to stay safe during Lunar New Year celebrations in downtown Houston

HOUSTON – Lunar New Year, which is often called the ‘Spring Festival’ or ‘Chinese New Year’, is the most important holiday in Chinese and many Asian communities.

Several events are happening throughout the Lunar New Year Festival this year including one in downtown Houston at Market Square Park.

This year will feature a popular tradition where people exchange red envelopes which are often filled with money.

Ahead of the fun, the Houston Police Department is warning eventgoers that the celebration is a target for thieves.

Officer Tram with the Houston Police Department offered the following tips to avoid becoming a victim during the festivities.

1, Put your cell phone away when you’re walking.

2, Keep your eyes open so that you’re aware of what’s going on around you.

3, Have your keys out and ready so you can unlock your doors quickly.

4, Call 911 or drive to the nearest police station if you feel like you are being followed.
