2 security guards among 3 shot outside event venue in southeast Houston, police say (KPRC)

HOUSTON – Investigators had their hands full early Saturday trying to determine what led to multiple people, including two security guards, being shot following a private concert in the southeast side of town, according to Houston police.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting near the Tumbling R Ranch The Fairgrounds in the 4900 block of Fuqua near Cottingham Street at around 3 a.m., HPD Lt. R. Willkens said.

Police said a concert was taking place in the back of the venue, and security guards began asking people to leave around 2 a.m., after the event was over.

One of the guards confronted two suspects, who were possibly armed with rifles, and at some point, shots were fired. Two more guards rushed to help their colleague.

Police said all three security guards pulled out guns and, during an exchange of gunfire, two of them were hit.

That was not the only shooting connected to the concert.

In a news conference, HPD Assistant Chief T. Hardin said a man who was attempting to pick up his girlfriend from the event was also shot after getting into some sort of altercation with two suspects down the street from the venue.

Police said a fourth victim, possibly a bystander, arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound that also stemmed from the incident.

Each victim was expected to survive.

All guards cooperated with authorities. One of them told KPRC 2′s Rilwan Balogun that the shooting stemmed from a “misunderstanding that led to an altercation.”

“(The) altercation led to possible shooting or shooting and so me and my security team handled it as best as we could,” he added.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call HPD’s Major Assaults unit at 713-308-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
