Mother charged after 6-year-old found wandering outside apartment complex alone, deputies say

HOUSTON – A mother who allegedly left her 6-year-old child alone was arrested and charged after he was found wandering outside an apartment complex late at night on Saturday, according to deputies with Constable Mark Herman’s Office.

Kayla Johnson has been charged with child abandonment.

Deputies responded to the Kendall Manor Apartments at 2 a.m. in regards of a child walking around the complex parking lot.

Upon arrival, deputies said they found the child by himself and were able to get in contact with his mother. Johnson reportedly told deputies that she was not home and left the child home alone.

Deputies said Johnson finally arrived at the complex at 5:18 a.m. and was taken into custody. Child Protective Services was called and took custody of the child.

Johnson was booked into the Harris County Jail.
