Houston ISD teacher honored by TIME for providing innovative refugee aid in schools

HOUSTONMarie Moreno, former teacher at Las Americas Newcomer School and Jane Long Futures Academy, won the honor of being named on the first-ever Verizon and TIME’s Innovative Teachers of the Year list.

Moreno was honored for her efforts in helping immigrant refugee children and their families integrate into the United States at her school. Most recently, she helped 90 children from Afghanistan. Moreno taught parents how the U.S. public school system works, how to advocate for their children in school, and more, and now counsels other schools in the area and nationwide as they also accept immigrant refugee families.

Moreno was hand-picked from hundreds of applicants by a team of editors at TIME.

She appeared on KPRC 2+ to share more about her work. Watch the full interview in the video player at the top of the page.
