When witnesses knocked on the apartment door, they said three small children were inside with no adult supervision.

Authorities say the mother, Kelly Pete, arrived back at the complex three hours later. She initially said told police that she was at the grocery store before admitting that was a lie.

The children, ages 6, 3, and 2, were placed in Child Protective Services.
