2 men accused of shooting at off-duty University of Houston officer arrested

HOUSTON – Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting incident involving an off-duty University of Houston - Downtown officer.

Antonio Esparza, 29, and Mark Douglas Reyes, 17, have both been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Esparaza also faces tampering/fabricating with physical evidence charges.

On Aug. 14, Houston police responded to reports of a shooting in the 13500 block of Market Street around 10 p.m.

Investigators said the off-duty UHD officer was driving on Uvalde Street when he was cut off by the driver of a white Chevrolet Impala. The officer said he honked his horn at the driver, and a short time later, the driver pulled on the side of him and started shooting. The officers said he returned fire and the suspects fled the scene.

After an investigation, both Reyes and Esparza were arrested for their roles in the incident.
