‘Downtown Dave’ has died after COVID-19, cancer fight, family says; Read some of the touching tributes on social media

HOUSTON – Dave Rojas, better known as “Downtown Dave” and founding member of the Big Hat Posse, died Friday morning after a battle with cancer and COVID-19, according to social media posts from his family members and others.

Rojas’ cousin, Mark and sister Laura shared the news to his friends and fans of his passing via Facebook, both thanking them for their thoughts and prayers for Dave.

“He put up a great fight and can now rest in peace,” Mark wrote in his Facebook post. “I know his family took comfort in the number of people who prayed for him, friends and family, and those who only knew him as a staple at Houston sporting events as a founding member of the Big Hat Posse.”

According to his Twitter page @BigHatPosse, he checked into St. Joseph Medical Center’s ER on Christmas Eve for low oxygen due to COVID-19. He wrote that he received a COVID-19 antibody treatment and two doses of plasma. He was on “higher oxygen” and asked for prayers.
