Trader Joe's recalls nut butters

HOUSTON – A new grocery store in the Houston area has recalled some of its products because of salmonella concerns.

The recall is for Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter (sku 97111), Valencia Peanut Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds (sku 98927) and Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds (sku 94079). The recalled items come in 16-ounce plastic jars and have expiration dates up to and including 24SEPT13.

Customers who have purchased the recalled nut butters have been urged not to eat the products and to throw them away or return them to any Trader Joe's for a full refund.

All of the recalled products have been removed from store shelves, the grocer said.

The recall was voluntary, but the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating whether there is a direct link between the products and illnesses.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health and Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Rhode Island Department of Health announced Friday that Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with sea salt may be linked to 29 cases of Salmonella Bredeney across multiple states.

Production of the nut butters has been suspended while the FDA and supplier continue their investigations.

Anyone with questions or concerns may call Trader Joe's Customer Relations at 626-599-3817 between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
