Celebrating Ramadan and Eid with Middle Eastern desserts

HOUSTON – Ramadan is considered the most sacred month for Muslims worldwide. During this time, they fast from dawn till dusk, refraining from consuming food and water throughout the day. Then, at sunset, Muslims break their fast by having a meal.

However, it is not only about abstaining from food at a given time. It’s also a period of self-restraint, gratitude, removing bad habits, and spiritual guidance.

This year, April 10 marked the end of Ramadan. Not forgetting their spiritual experience, Muslims celebrated the special occasion with family gatherings, feasts, and gift-giving. The holiday is called Eid-Al-Fitr, or the festival of breaking the fast.

Whether it’s Eid or Ramadan, food is a great way to bring people and cultures together at the dinner table. Last week, Suzie’s Pastry Shoppe owner and pastry chef stopped by Houston Life and helped us start the festivities with a Middle Eastern recipe perfect for Ramadan, Eid, or any occasion.

They specialize in making European and Middle Eastern desserts such as baklava, cakes, cannoli, eclairs, cookies, and more. Their baklavas are crafted in-house from scratch and hand-rolled.
