MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – A Montgomery County man in his early 70s is the first person in 2016 with a confirmed case of the West Nile virus.

There have been no cases of the Zika virus reported, the county said in a news release. The Montgomery County Public Health District asks homeowners to do their part to help fight West Nile virus.

"With the first case of West Nile virus reported this season, it's time for the public to stay on the alert and take steps to protect themselves from the risks of disease borne by mosquitoes," County Judge Craig Doyal said.

He urged homeowners to follow the guidelines outlined in a release from the public health district to stay safe.

Doyal said the county will continue to take appropriate steps to control the mosquito population, with county commissioners employing a variety of tools, including trapping, testing and spraying for mosquito control.

Montgomery County recorded a total of 16 cases of West Nile in 2015, with the first case reported on July 28, 2015.

The fact that the latest case was reported later in the year suggests that Montgomery County is on track to have fewer cases this year, officials said.
