Reject the Text: Houstonians head to Austin to protest controversial Mexican-American Heritage text

HOUSTON – More than 100 community members headed back to Austin Tuesday to protest the approval of a controversial Mexican-American textbook.

Many people rallied outside the state capital and testified in front of the board of education in September in criticism of the book, "Mexican American Heritage."

Since then, Momentum Publishing made changes to the text but community members still disagree with its language. They say the book describes Latinos as lazy and uneducated.

Nearly 100 people headed to Austin Tuesday morning to once again protest the text they say teaches discrimination.

"Let's send a clear message to the state board of education today that they must reject this book and start over," one of the protesters said.

The rally is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
