Cheap Labor Day travel deals

The last two weeks of the official summer vacation season are upon us. It'll culminate in the long Labor Day holiday weekend, where record travel might occur because of travel bargains.

"Affordable airfare and a strong hotel market really making it advantageous time for travelers to get away," said Jeannene Tornatore, senior editor of travel website Orbitz.

Historically low gas prices are still where consumers are saving the most, but that's not the only way to save.

"We are seeing flight prices lower than we've seen the past couple seasons," Tornatore said.

Airline tickets might be cheaper, too, but don't plan on using frequent flyer miles. Labor Day weekend is usually included as a blackout period.

Even without those miles, our friends at Escape Houston found round-trip non-stop flights to San Francisco on Frontier for $78. United will take you to Los Angeles and back to Houston for $127. Or jet to Puerto Vallarta on Southwest for $257 round-trip.
