Loss-prevention authorities with Macy’s department store spotted five individuals concealing items and leaving the store without paying, before getting in a Chevy Malibu sedan.

The Malibu was stopped by local law enforcement, and the group of five women and one man—the driver of the group—were arrested.

Officers recovered more than $2,500 worth of stolen merchandise from multiple stores including Macy’s.

In an ironic glimpse into how prevalent shoplifting has become, a separate would-be shoplifter was apprehended at the Deerbrook Macy’s as Humble PD reported the initial bust.

This time, a woman concealed more than $170 worth of merchandise in a shopping bag lined with tin foil, which she believed would obstruct the anti-theft detection devices in the store.

Unfortunately, her brilliant plan ended up just like the interior of her bag: foiled.

The Humble Police Department released a post announcing the arrests on X (formerly Twitter):

“These successful arrests show the importance of collaboration and vigilance in our ongoing efforts to maintain a safe shopping environment for everyone at Deerbrook Mall. A big thank you to everyone involved!” a paragraph from the statement from Humble PD read.
