Authorities are piecing together how a church in Channelview caught fire overnight Tuesday.

It happened a little after 2:15 a.m. at the corner of Dell Dale and S Brentwood St. off East Freeway. That’s where officials with Channelview Fire Department were called, along with Crosby, Highlands, and several other agencies to respond.

According to a Channelview FD District Chief, initial crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof. As a result, the building suffered additional damage.

There was no power, and the church was vacant at the time, however, it’s unclear if the lack of electricity was due to last week’s storm or if the church was shuttered.

The cause of the fire is unknown, as a result, and no injuries were reported.

We’re told a primary and secondary search was not made due to the fire load, so it’s unclear if someone was squatting inside but an investigation remains underway.
