Storms will roar back Thursday with areas around Houston under flood threat. Our northern cities are at the greatest risk, but all of Houston faces at least a street flood threat. Meteorologist Anthony Yanez estimates rainfall totals from 1 to 3″ are possible with higher amounts of 5 to 7″ north of I-10.

Here’s what you can do today to safeguard your property before tomorrow’s storms:

  • Check your roof for loose shingles and leaks to prevent major damage.
  • Trim aging trees with overhanging limbs to avoid potential hazards.
  • Ensure your plumbing system is well-maintained to prevent flooding and sewage backups.
  • Avoid covering AC units during floods to prevent electrocution hazards.
  • Stock up on essential supplies like water, canned food, flashlights, and medications to last through the storm and aftermath.
  • Prepare for your pets’ needs with enough food, water, medications, and a pet carrier, and keep a current photo of them in case they get lost.

In addition, here are some tips from the Texas Severe Storms Association for dealing with flash floods:

  • Avoid low-water crossings and flood-prone areas when driving.
  • Leave your vehicle immediately if it stalls in flood waters and move to higher ground.
  • Keep away from flooded creeks, streams, or drainage ditches, especially children, as swift water can be dangerous.
  • Act quickly, as rising waters can make escape difficult, and soggy banks may collapse.
