Possible tornado causes damage in Floresville

FLORESVILLE, Texas – A possible tornado hit Floresville on Friday morning as the town of about 6,500 people was waking up.

The storm hit in the middle of the community on Highway 181 at about 6:05 a.m. The sheriff said it was less than two hours before students and teachers filled the school. Some buses were already out on their routes as two walls collapsed at the school.  Both left huge holes in the building.

Daniel Ochoa, the parent of a freshman at Floresville High School, said, "I can just imagine kids coming off of the bus and parents dropping off their kids. It could have really been bad."

His son, Jordan Ochoa, added, "Pretty bad because the top roof is gone. So it's really bad. Good thing we weren't in school."

Just across the street, the storm parked an RV on top of a Holiday Inn Express. The camper apparently came from the RV park behind the hotel.

"It's horrific," Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt Jr. said. "Like an explosion. I live a mile down the road. I heard nothing."

Tackitt said at least one man was briefly trapped inside an RV.

He said at least two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one was killed in the storm.

The storm knocked off power to part of the town. Utility workers worked Friday afternoon to repair broken lines and poles.
