More freezing cold temps for Houston area

HOUSTON – Another night of freezing cold temperatures are in store for the Houston area.

Look for a freeze line along Highway 59 north through downtown Houston, and southwest to Wharton County.

Temperatures will begin falling into the 30s by midnight and continue falling through the rush hour Tuesday, bottoming out between 27 degrees well north and west of Houston, to right around 32 degrees in the downtown area.

Protect people and pets especially. Tender vegetation should be covered or brought inside (poinsettias are very sensitive). Pipes will not be an issue.

One caveat exists: thin cloud cover moving across the state from the Pacific Ocean may be enough to insulate many of us and keep the freeze away, but don't count on that -- still take the necessary precautions.

The warm up begins Tuesday afternoon with highs in the mid 50s, and on Wednesday, the first official day of winter, we will see highs in the 60s. An early preview of the Christmas weekend indicates warm weather with a few splashes of rain possible on Christmas Day.

The season’s first freeze arrived Monday morning in Houston, with a temperature of 30 degrees reported at Bush Intercontinental Airport. A wind chill of 19 degrees was reported.
