HOUSTON – One person was killed and another was injured in a pair of crashes on Houston-area highways early Friday morning.
The first crash happened at 5:11 a.m. on State Highway 288 at Airline Road.
According to officials, an Iowa Colony police officer was conducting a traffic stop and brought the driver of the vehicle between the police cruiser and the stopped vehicle to conduct a field sobriety test. As the officer was conducting his test, another car hit the back of the cruiser, pinning the driver of the first vehicle between it and the cruiser.
The driver of the first vehicle suffered broken legs, according to authorities. The officer was not injured.
Authorities said they believe the driver of the car that hit the cruiser was intoxicated, but a blood test is being conducted to determine if that was the case.
Highway 288 reopened about 7:15 a.m.
The second crash happened at 5:20 a.m. on State Highway 146 at Interstate 10.
According to Baytown police, a vehicle was traveling south on 146 and began switching lanes. After checking his blind spot, he turned his head back around and found 29-year-old Jessica Smith standing on the highway. He tried to stop, but ended up hitting Smith.
Police said Smith was flown to Memorial-Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
No charges are being filed against the driver, police said.
