Steven Cavazos

Traffic Anchor/Reporter

Steven Cavazos is a traffic anchor and general assignments reporter on weekday mornings at KSAT 12.

Steven has deep South Texas roots as he was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley. Steven had a love for public speaking at an early age, but struggled with a speech impediment. However, he did not let that stop him. He joined any extracurricular activity that would allow him to improve his abilities and eventually overcome the obstacle. His family would often joke that he would end up in television news… little did they know.

In 2014, he began his news career as a staff writer for the Valley Morning Star in Harlingen. It’s where he got his first experience as a reporter. Steven focused on health and social issues in his community and highlighted the work of advocates and nonprofit organizations.

He later ventured into broadcast television and learned the ins and outs as a production assistant at the local CBS affiliate. Steven also assisted with creative services, operations and photography.

He attended the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and eventually applied his real-world experience on campus. He helped launch the school’s first TV station and took on the role of the assistant station manager/reporter. His story on the red tide plaguing the Gulf Coast earned him a 1st place award at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.

In 2016, he graduated with a degree in communications. Later that year, he landed his first TV gig as a morning reporter for the ABC affiliate in the sparkling city by the sea, Corpus Christi. Steven covered breaking news and community events.

In 2019, the Alamo City came calling. He began his career at KSAT as a multimedia journalist on the Nightbeat. However, in 2020, he was ignited with a new passion for telling the stories of his community. Some of his most notable reports were coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Before the year was over, Steven was offered a chance to trade late nights for early mornings as a reporter for Good Morning San Antonio. It wasn’t long after, he switched lanes into the role of traffic anchor in 2021.

When Steven is not in the driver's seat, he is on the hunt for solutions. In 2022, he joined the Solutionaries team which is comprised of other journalists from around the country. Their goal is to highlight creative answers to systemic problems. He has covered topics ranging from mental health, school safety, and food deserts

During his downtime, he is either at home cooking up a gourmet dinner for friends or supporting local restaurants and businesses. Steven has a passion for self-care and enjoys meditation and time outdoors.

Despite the early alarms, Steven is lucky he continues to call South Texas home.
