Texans rookie QB Deshaun Watson undergoes successful knee surgery

HOUSTON – Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson gave fans a glimpse of what is to come in the years ahead, but after ACL surgery, a long rehab is the priority.

Watson will remain close to the daily preparations as he continues his football education.

“He’s very involved, he’s in the meetings,” said Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien. “He’s a good communicator, he loves his teammates and he’s a winner.”

On Wednesday, Tom Savage took most of the first-team reps, but backup T.J. Yates also worked with the first-team offense as he gets comfortable again with this team.

Savage remains confident that he can get the job done.

“I’m confident in myself and I do believe I am a starting quarterback in this league,” said Savage. “I do believe I can throw the ball accurately. That’s never been an issue for me. I know I just have to do it and give these guys shots.”

O’Brien made it clear after Wednesday’s practice what he wants to see now out of Savage beginning Sunday, when the Texans take on the Rams in Los Angeles.

“Play loose and play free and let it rip. Go out and have some fun and don’t worry about anything other than making the right reads, getting us into the right plays and let it rip,” said O’Brien.
