The Baltimore Orioles selected Oregon State’s Adley Rutschman as the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft Monday night, The Associated Press reported.

It was the second time the Orioles have led off the draft. They last took LSU pitcher Ben McDonald in 1989.

Rutschman, 21, had been the favorite to go first since he led Oregon State to the College World Series title last year and was selected most outstanding player, the AP said.

In his junior season, he hit .411 with 17 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Rutschman, from Sherwood, Oregon, is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and was also the Pac-12 player of the year, the AP said.
