Houston Texans draft picks to be announced from space

Space announcements are a first

HOUSTON – There is a lot of anticipation as Texans fans wait to find out who their team will choose in the first few rounds of the NFL draft, but the picks on day 3 of the draft will also get a lot of attention. Those announcements will be made by astronauts on the International Space Station.

On Saturday, the final day of the draft, astronaut Peggy Whitson will introduce the Texans' picks from the ISS then send them down to Philadelphia.

Retired astronaut Scott Kelly at Space Center Houston will help make the team's Round 4 and 5 picks.

The Texans do not currently have a pick in the sixth round. A Texans fan selected by the league in Philadelphia will announce the Round 7 pick.

Former wide receiver Andre Johnson will announce the team's Round 2 pick on Friday, while Brian Cushing will announce the Round 3 pick.

All NFL teams will make their day-3 pick announcements in a special way. Each team was asked to choose a unique location and to recognize key individuals.

Here is a look at how some of the other teams will announce their selections:

  • PITTSBURGH STEELERS - Two stars from the hit NBC show "This Is Us" will make the announcement. Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore play Jack and Rebecca Pearson. The Pearson family loves the Pittsburgh Steelers. The actors will announce the selections from Heinz Field along with current players and members of a local youth football team.
  • ARIZONA CARDINALS - Ten season ticket members will join cheerleaders and Big Red, the team's mascot, to announce picks from the Grand Canyon.
  • CHICAGO BEARS - Bears running back Jordan Howard and military personnel will make selections from the team's headquarters at Halas Hall.
  • CLEVELAND BROWNS - Former Browns player Josh Cribbs and season ticket members, along with alumni, will announce picks from Cedar Point Amusement Park.
  • DENVER BRONCOS - Military members and NFL legends will make selections from the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site.
  • INDIANAPOLIS COLTS - Colts defensive end Kendall Langford will make picks from the Indianapolis Zoo, along with staff personnel.  
  • JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - Picks will be announced from London and Jacksonville.
  • KANSAS CITY CHIEFS - Service members will make picks from Whiteman Air Force Base.
  • NEW YORK JETS - Children of fallen EMT Yadira Arroyo will announce Day 3 selections from EMT House 26. 
  • PHILADELPHIA EAGLES - Actor Morris Chestnut and CNBC's Jim Cramer will make picks from the NFL Draft Theater.
  • SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS - Country music singer Jon Pardi will make picks from Levi's Stadium.
  • TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS - General Joseph Votel, commander of the United States Central Command, will announce selections from the team's headquarters at One Buccaneer Place.
  • WASHINGTON REDSKINS - Actor Michael Ealy will make picks with fans from FedEx Field.

The NFL draft begins Thursday night.
