Concerns arise after young child struck by foul ball at Yankee Stadium

HOUSTON – Safety for fans at the ballpark has been a concern for Major League Baseball for years, and after Wednesday’s troubling incident at Yankee Stadium – a young girl was struck in the face with a foul ball – safety is definitely back at the forefront of players' and fans’ minds.

During the Yankees vs. Twins game, Yankees infielder Todd Frazier hit a line drive into the stands, beyond third base, and it struck a young girl in the face.

Stadium personnel were immediately summoned to her side for medical aid, and shortly after that the young girl was carried from her seat to make her way to the hospital.

The incident took place just beyond the Twins dugout and there was clear horror on their faces as they looked on. The same was true for Frazier immediately after he hit the ball, then heard the gasps from the crowd.

Over the last several years, MLB has worked with clubs to expand their netting, but there are strict mandatory guidelines that must be followed on how much area must be covered.

The Houston Astros expanded their netting to stretch from dugout to dugout. They, along with nine other MLB clubs, have outfitted their stadiums with such netting, but many other teams have not yet, citing fan enjoyment and hoping to eliminate obstructed views.
