HOUSTON – Texas Southern University announced it has accepted the resignation of head football coach Michael Haywood.

"I would like to thank Texas Southern University President Dr. Austin Lane, Dr. Charles McClelland and Mr. Kevin Granger for the opportunity to lead the football program here at TSU the past three seasons," said Haywood.

"We would like to thank coach Haywood and his staff for the contributions they've made to the football program here at Texas Southern. We wish him and his family well in their future endeavors," said TSU interim VP of Athletics Kevin Granger.

Haywood was hired in December 2015, and the Tigers went 2-9 over each of the last two seasons after Haywood compiled a 4-9 record in his first season at Texas Southern. Overall, the team compiled a record of 8-25, including a 7-16 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

A national search to fill the vacant head coaching position will begin immediately.
