Lochte sets US championship record in 200M IM
4-time Olympian beat Phelps' record on Sunday
Four-time Olympian Ryan Lochte set a meet record in the 200-meter individual medley at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships on Sunday.
The meet in East Meadow, New York, was the first sanctioned U.S. swim meet for the six-time Olympic champion since his 10-month suspension stemming from his behavior at the 2016 Rio Games.
In winning the event in a time of 1 minute, 59.24 seconds, Lochte beat the previous meet record of 1:59.26 set by Michael Phelps on Nov. 30, 2006.
Lochte is the current world record holder in the event, with a time of 1 minute, 54 seconds set on July 28, 2011. He owns two silvers and a bronze in the event at the Olympics, but finished fifth in Rio, marking his fourth consecutive Olympic final in the event.
Xavier Mohammed finished second on Sunday with a time of 2:00.47, and Sam Stewart was third in 2:01.51.
Lochte also competed in the 100-meter backstroke final at the meet on Saturday, finishing in fifth place with a time of 55.16 seconds.
