Brazosport ready for first trip to state tournament

Exporters coach is a former Brazosport player

HOUSTON – It's hard to miss Ondra Waddy's passion for basketball.

His love for Brazosport high school is unmatched.

In 1990, he played for the Brazosport team that made it the regional final, then a decade later he became the team's head coach.

Now he's guided the Exporters to the state championship weekend for the first time in school history.

"It's been a really great season, a special season, a memorable season," said Waddy.

"We're blessed to be where we are today."

The players are thrilled to be playing on the big stage, not only for themselves, but for their school, community and their head coach.

"To be able to do something that he couldn't and try to help him get that ring, words can't explain what I'm feeling right now," said junior Hunter Quick.

"We talked about this forever it seems," senior Chris Rossow said.

"Ever since I was in high school we've been wanting to win state, so it feels great," he added.

The Exporters will play their 4A state semifinal game on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in San Antonio against Midlothian Heritage.
