OK, Let's Hoop

For the first time in months the sports reports and sports pages (or websites for you kids) are full of basketball reports.

The Rockets have already played 55 games and we are still trying to name the starting five. The local colleges send me info on practice times and games. Hands in the air if you think I still go to basketball practices. Ok, only ones involving my grand kids and I haven't made one of those as yet. It's not that I don't like seeing kids hoops, but I live 957 miles from their gym. I am told 2 of the 3 are pretty good. The third one is only 4 months old and has a problem double dribbling. Just about the time we get ready for the real hoops seasons, we will start worrying about our favorite team, the Astros.

I can remember when I hardly thought about football. Growing up in the Midwest football was interesting but nothing like the basketball and baseball seasons. Not even close. I once dreamed of playing in the state tourney. IT WAS ON TV.  In those years the black and white of tv ruled and not every house had one. If your school was lucky enough to get to state the town shut down. Our town stayed open every darned year. My coach put me on the freshman traveling squad and told my teammates if he ran out of smokes he knew I would have some. High praise. Not true, but high praise. The next year I had a broken arm from football and had to try out for the school play instead of basketball. The play had girls.

Around here it figures to be football forever and I get it. It might be nice to see the Rockets do something special but as long as the Warriors are in the West I am counting down the days till the Astros and Cubs meet in the World Series.
