Daily Craig: Brush with No. 4

So the Rams should hire Jim Harbaugh to replace my pal Jeff Fisher?

Harbaugh's name comes up for every job except Energy Secretary and for some reason I CAN'T EXPLAIN, Rick Perry got that job. GAYLORD PERRY MAYBE, but GOVERNOR FOR LIFE RICK?  Ok, enough of politics.

Harbaugh and I sat down for a long discussion of Indy cars and football several years ago. We were in the infield of the big race track in KANSAS CITY. Harbaugh was part owner of Indy car no. 4 driven by Vitor Meira. Meira is a legend for having starting 7 or 8,000 races and never winning any of them. Harbaugh should have been his crew chief.

Jim wore No. 4 with the Colts and became a big fan of the open wheel racers. He told me he was going to be a full time coach and had a job offer from Rice. He didn't take it and instead was going to the U.OF SAN DIEGO. The tough academic school not the state school in the same town. I really liked him and he said his wife-to-be loved California, so it would surely work out. Don't call him surely. The Indy car race had car no. 4 in good shape until it got sideways or something broke and the day ended early. So did Jim's career in San Diego. THE REST is football history.

I have often wondered what NO. 4 would have done if he had taken the Rice offer. My guess is he would have worked wonders like he did at Stanford, THE 49ers, and now Michigan. He would have stayed on Main St. about as long as Tom Herman did on Cullen Blvd.
