University of Houston basketball legend Dwight Jones dies

HOUSTON – University of Houston and NBA alumnus Dwight Jones died Monday at Memorial Hermann/Woodlands at the age of 64. He had been battling a serious illness for over three years.

Jones was a Houston native and graduated from Wheatley High School in East Houston.

Jones played basketball for the Houston Cougars from 1971-1973, leading them to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He went on to compete in the 1972 Olympics for Team USA during his years with the Cougars.

After college, Jones was chosen in the 1973 NBA Draft as a first round pick to the Atlanta Hawks. He went on to play for the Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers over 10 seasons.
