Newsmakers for July 30: Turbulent politics in Austin and DC sorted out

Coaches train athletes to fight domestic abuse

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is playing hardball with legislators this special session. That’s the analysis of Gary Polland, conservative Republican and editor of the Texas Conservative Review. He's a guest this week on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall.

“Governor Abbott has decided what he wants out of the Legislature what he didn’t get out of the regular session,” Polland said.

Polland added that Abbott has been very active.

“He’s had meetings with Republican representatives and Republican senators and told them basically, 'If you don’t support me and my agenda then I’m not going to be supporting you.'”

How likely is it that the governor’s priorities pass?

Polland and Dr. Mark Jones, a political science professor at the Baker Institute and Rice University, engage in an insightful exchange of opinions.

President Donald Trump is following the “populist’s playbook,” and is using the media to play the much needed role of the enemy, according to Jones.

“There’s not only no incentive for the president to have rapprochement with the media. To the contrary, he thrives on having conflict with the media, and the more he can demonize the media and make it appear to be his enemy, the better off he’s going to be.”

One in three high school students experiences some form of abuse by his or her dating partner. Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse is teaming up with Houston area coaches for “Coaching Boys into Men.” The program allows coaches to mentor student athletes to prevent abuse before it starts.

”Coaching Boys into Men is a non-violence or violence-prevention program that really is a train the trainer,” said Sherri Kendall, CEO of AVDA. "It trains the coaches to work with their athletes to encourage healthy relationships.”

Michael Scrutchin is athletic director at Cristo Rey Jesuit Preparatory, the host of the free training on Aug. 10.

"A lot of the players look up to us, so what we want to do is try to implement a lot of character relationships, building strong relationships with the students so that they can go forward with strong character and take that into their personal relationships.”

Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall airs at 10 a.m. every Sunday, right after "Meet the Press."
