HOUSTON - Not guilty -- that was the jury's verdict for former Houston Police officer Andrew Blomberg.
He was accused of "official oppression" in the 2010 beating of 15-year-old Chad Holley as he was running from a burglary. That violent arrest was caught on tape and a very prominent part of the case.
The not guilty verdict prompted immediate reaction from black activists and others who feel members of the black community are once again on the losing end of of justice. The guests on Houston Newsmakers this week are uniquely qualified to discuss the case, its outcome and the repercussions.
Dick DeGuerin was Blomberg's defense attorney and talks about what he thinks swayed the jury to acquit his client, and how the jury make-up was all white.
New Black Panther Party leader Quanell X was the person who released the tape of the beating to the media and speaks about the outrage felt by the community.
KPRC Local 2 Legal Analyst Brian Wice adds his insight to the conversation to analyze how the jury came to its decision and all weigh in on how the decision will impact race relations in Houston.
Also on this week's program, Jared Woodfill, Chairman of the Harris County Republican Party and Gerry Birnberg, former Chairman of the Harris County Democratic party. They address the decision by President Obama to support same sex marriage and the impact it will have on the polls and the presidential race, and what's most important as the Texas primary fast approaches on May 29.
