Feb. 2: The truth about the Affordable Care Act

By Khambrel Marshall - Meteorologist, 'Newsmakers' Host

HOUSTON - Dr. Vivian Ho makes a return visit to Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall to give an update on the challenges and successes of the Affordable Care Act.

Dr. Ho is the chair of Health Economics at the Baker Institute at Rice University and professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. After a disastrous roll out the plan in the fall, Dr. Ho talks about what needs to happen for the Affordable Care Act to succeed and what could happen to make it a failure.

There were areas of the plan that looked problematic before its roll out, but the roll out itself was not one of them.

"We just didn't predict how difficult it would be to get this health care website up and rolling so people could purchase health insurance," she said.

Republicans are now offering a plan they said would work better. Is it?  Is it possible to start all over? Dr. Ho addresses those and other questions about this much debated health care program.

Also on this week's program, Dr. David Buck, the founder and president of Healthcare for the Homeless, an organization that works to try to provide much needed healthcare to that segment of our population that always lives on the margins of society.

In 2011, there were 6,000 homeless people who made at least 10 visits to Houston emergency rooms at a cost of more than $800 million -- an expense that is ultimately absorbed by taxpayers. Dr. Buck talks about what his organization is doing to reduce those numbers and improve the quality of life the less fortunate.

Southeast Texas was in the deep freeze for several days this past week in what has been a colder than normal winter. Why are we so cold? Is it a trend that is likely to continue? What kind of impact will our current cold weather have on the 2014 hurricane season?

KPRC Hurricane Expert Bill Read fills in all the details. Read is not only the KPRC hurricane expert and former Director of the National Hurricane Center, he is also the former meteorologist in charge of the Houston-Galveston Weather office, having served in that capacity for 16 years. Read knows Southeast Texas weather and says while this past week was cold, it's been much colder.
