Women Making a Difference: Woman creates foundation to help mothers in need

HOUSTON – Hope Ewing's path to finding her own destiny has been dark and full of obstacles, but she believes that path led her to her destiny of helping others.

"It was kind of a tragedy turned ... I say triumph,” Ewing said.

In 2008, her father was murdered and hope fought her depression by volunteering at a Houston area Food bank.

Ewing noticed her female clients were asking for one thing in particular--diapers.

"I couldn’t find a place to refer them to and it just literally haunted my heart. And I was like, OK well I've got to do something. What can I do? And it was kind of like an “aha” moment."

Ewing began to collect diapers for women in need. She started buying them and storing them in her own home, then her efforts grew into a full-time job.

"I actually started in my home. Collecting diapers, donating them to agencies..."

"I didn't know what the diaper foundation would look like. Initially when I started, it didn't have a name. I just kept going. The main thing is meeting a need in Houston that has not been met, which is simply diapers," Ewing said.

The Diaper Foundation, as it would come to be known, has collected and donated thousands of diapers to moms in need.

"I think the face of needy has changed, sometimes there are working moms that just can't make ends meet at the end of the month. I really, really believe most of our clients that come into our program are not looking for a handout -- they're looking for a hand up."

In order to be eligible to receive diaper assistance, you must meet this criteria:

- Must have photo ID

- Must be receiving Medicaid

- Must have a Medicaid Award Letter

- (In-person) appointments necessary

- Must have birth certificate or birth facts
