Woman found beaten to death in southeast Houston cemetery

HOUSTON – A woman whose body was found in a southeast Houston cemetery last week was beaten to death, according to investigators.

Police were called around 10:40 a.m. Friday to the Forest Park Cemetery in the 6900 block of Lawndale Street for reports of a person lying in the grass.

A landscaping worker found the partially disrobed body of the woman, who is believed to be in her 30s or 40s. 

Medical examiners said the woman died from blunt force trauma to the head and torso. Homicide detectives said they are investigating the case.

Her identity has not yet been released.

"We're going to look for witnesses that may have been in the area last night or this morning, and we'll go from there. We need get her identified so we can find out who her friends and family are," Sergeant Brian Chebret, with the Houston Police Department's Homicide Unit, said.

Meanwhile the cemetery remained open.

Police are looking for witnesses.

A spokesperson for the cemetery released a statement that read, "We are currently working with the Houston Police Department to assist in their investigation. We are not at liberty to share any additional information since this is an ongoing investigation."
