Woman accused in murder-for-hire plot sentenced to up to 20 years

Maria Sosa pleads guilty to lesser charge

HOUSTON – The woman accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill her ex-husband pleaded guilty to a lesser crime of solicitation of second degree murder in court Tuesday.

Maria Sosa, 41,  was sentenced to up to 20 years in state prison with time served for hiring an undercover agent to kill her husband. She was given no right to an appeal, the judge said.

Sosa hired an undercover agent last year to kill her husband Ramon Sosa.

She promised the agent $2000 and her husband's truck once the job was done.

Her ex-husband spoke in court and said he and his wife were going through a divorce at the time of the plot. Everything was supposed to be split down the middle, but Ramone Sosa said that wasn't good enough.

Ramone Sosa said he moved to the United States from Mexico for a better life for his children.

He said when he met ex-wife the two had dreams of starting a business. They built a home and sent their children to the best schools. Ramone Sosa said Maria Sosa had everything she wanted, though their marriage had its ups and downs.

He claimed the simple divorce he thought they would have turned into Sosa wanting more. So much so that she hired someone to kill him so she could collect on his life insurance, he said.

"There was a time I thought I should go to her. I thought I should tell her, 'This is wrong.' Ramone Sosa said. "But everytime I listened to the audio, she wanted me dead bad, she wanted me dead bad. She even said I was better to her dead."

Maria Sosa has already served about a year a half in jail, she will begin serving out the rest of her sentence in a state prison.

“What if her wish came true? I would have been dead,” Ramone Sosa said.
