Woman, 71, found in shower with multiple stab wounds at apartment near Heights, police say

HOUSTON – A woman is recovering after being stabbed several times either Thursday night or Friday, according to police.

Police said the 71-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times at her apartment in the 2300 block of 18th Street. Police said it appears that the woman was taking a shower at the time of the attack.

Authorities are calling it a crime of opportunity.

A maintenance worker made the discovery Friday while he was servicing lights near the woman's apartment, police said.

Police said the woman lives alone and her first-floor apartment showed signs of forced entry.

The woman's vehicle was stolen, police said. Authorities are searching for a white Toyota Corolla with license plate BCX5887.

Police said that although the woman was found Friday around 11 a.m., she may have been attacked Thursday night.

There is no surveillance video of the attack and police said the woman may have been targeted.

"Obviously, this is one of the worst things you can do to anybody, but in particular, an elderly person who can't defend themselves. That's a pretty dangerous person," HPD investigator Norman Wallace said.

The woman is in stable condition, according to police. Authorities are trying to locater her family. Police said she may have a brother.
