Will Butterball's turkey shortage affect your Thanksgiving?

HOUSTON - A big bird shortage of fresh Butterball turkeys could impact your family's Thanksgiving next week.

When you consider that one in four Thanksgiving turkeys are Butterball, this news really is something to gobble about.

The company said it will be shipping about half as many large, never-frozen turkeys to retailers this year.

In a statement, a Butterball spokesperson said "We experienced a decline in weight gains on some of our farms causing a limited availability of large, fresh turkeys."

Local grocers tell Local 2 they haven't noticed the shortage. Aside from Butterball, HEB, for example, carries four other brands of turkeys. The grocery store is giving away up to a 12-pound frozen turkey for free when you buy an HEB spiral-sliced ham.

Butterball says it shipped all of its frozen turkeys so if you usually buy a fresh whole large bird and you can't find one this year, keep in mind; it can take three to five days to thaw one.
