What's that smoky smell, haze?

HOUSTON - If you walked outside Thursday and smelled something burning, you're not alone.

A stench filled the air and prompted dozens of people to call and email KPRC Local 2 with a common question: "Where is that smell coming from?"

Some people also said they saw a smoky haze.

According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the smoke and smell are coming from marsh fires that are burning just to the north of Bolivar Peninsula.

The fires are on property that is owned by the Moody Foundation and Brown & Root, TCEQ officials said. The land is surrounded by water on three sides.

Chambers County officials said the fire was started by lightning on Tuesday. They're letting it burn out naturally.
