Veteran impacted by Hurricane Ike gets new home

BACLIFF, Texas – For the first time in 31 years, Gwenna and Mike Hudgens are getting a new house.

Their original home was devastated by Hurricane Ike six years ago.

"I've arranged and rearranged the furniture in that house 100 times, so walking in and knowing we don't have to leave is quite emotional," Gwenna Hudgens said.

Mike Hudgens is a decorated Vietnam veteran. He was an Army medic who served two tours in Vietnam, received 11 air medals, a Purple Heart and Flying Cross medal. Since he served in the military, he was eligible for a housing recovery program.

"It impacts the whole community," Galveston County Commissioner Ryan Dennard said. "It's transformative. It's rebuilding not just the physical infrastructure of the community, but it's also rebuilding the character of the community."

The Hudgenses are excited to entertain in their home and break in the kitchen during the holidays. It's perfect timing as they will welcome their 11th grandchild soon.
