University of Houston football will retire No. 7 to honor QB greats

Case Keenum and David Klingler both wore number at UH

HOUSTON – The University of Houston football program will honor former quarterbacks Case Keenum and David Klingler by retiring their No. 7 jersey after the 2016 season.

Both quarterbacks won awards and led UH to victory on the gridiron.

Case Keenum ended his collegiate career in 2011, leading the Cougars to a 13-1 record and a win over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl. He also won the Sammy Baugh trophy twice in his career (2009, 2011). It's an award given to the nation's top college passer.

Keenum is currently in the National Football League as a quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams. He also played quarterback for the Houston Texans during his pro career.

David Klingler won the Sammy Baugh trophy in 1990. He owns 15 NCAA records, including passing touchdowns in a single game (11).

Klingler was picked sixth overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1992 NFL Draft. He played six seasons in the NFL with the Bengals and the Oakland Raiders.

Klingler is now an associate professor of Bible exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary.

No. 7 is the third jersey to be retired by UH football. No. 11 was retired in honor of 1989 Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware, and No. 78 was retired in honor of 1976 Lombardi Award winner Wilson Whitley.
